- Abstract
Hip hop, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, has had a profound impact on U.S. popular culture. From music to sports to advertising, hip hop has become a dominant force in mainstream society. The book "How Hip Hop Became Hit Pop: Radio, Rap and Race" explores how rap, one of hip hop's musical elements, made its way onto commercial radio stations in the 1980s and 1990s. The mainstreaming of rap brought about changes in both the commercial radio industry and the genre itself, but it also raised questions about the material realities of Black Americans and the commodification of hip hop. Understanding the journey of hip hop's mainstream success helps shed light on its dual nature as a revolutionary art form and a product of profit-seeking media industries.
