- Abstract
An estimated 160 people in every 100 000 are affected by ulcerative colitis (UC), while Crohn's disease (CD) is found in approximately 50 in 100 000 (British Society of Gastroenterolgy (BSG), 2003). Although men and women are equally affected, the fact that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) commonly presents in the reproductive years is a major concern for women regarding potential effects on fertility, pregnancy and the developing foetus (Katz, 2004). It has been shown that nurses, support groups and counselling complement physician-led treatment (Nightingale et al, 2000; Smith et al, 2002) and the IBD nurse specialist can play an important role in supporting patients before, throughout and after pregnancy. Trying to conceive a child can be complicated by various factors and circumstances in any woman, such as age and lifestyle or conditions affecting the reproductive organs, e.g. endometriosis, or polycystic ovary syndrome (American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRP), 2006). This article explores the problems women with IBD can experience in addition to these and demonstrates an approach to provide optimal care.
