- Title
Sunscreen Safety: 2024 Updates.
- Authors
Adler, Brandon L.
- Abstract
This article provides an update on the safety of sunscreen based on available evidence. The regulation of sunscreens in the United States is different from Europe, with the FDA regulating them as over-the-counter drugs. No new active sunscreen ingredient has been approved by the FDA since 1999, except for one product line. The FDA requires additional safety data for chemical sunscreen filters, although there is no high-quality human study demonstrating negative effects. Concerns have been raised about the impact of sunscreen on frontal fibrosing alopecia and coral reef health, but more convincing data is needed to establish causality.
