- Abstract
This essay presents a critique of the 1855 poem "Andrea del Sarto," by Robert Browning, focusing on the themes of social control, women's dis-empowerment, and sexuality. Further subjects addressed include the character of Lucrezia Borgia in Italian literary history and in English literature, gender norms in the 1850s, and the poem's engagement with the theme of subjectivity.
