- Abstract
This article focuses on the relation between teachers, capitalists, and social class as depicted in the plays Pygmalion and The Millionairess by George Bernard Shaw. The plays show social class markers to be powerful barriers that limit the potential for class crossings. On the other end of class lines, in the play The Millionairess, one see a different sort of success story. In the play, Shaw reinterprets the traditional rags-to-riches narrative to connote criminality, where climbing up the social ladder and learning its customs are depicted not as a noble pursuit, but rather as an underhanded masquerade.
