- Abstract
Donations Land Claims are an important part of Oregon's history. Beginning in the mid 1800s, Donations Land Claims conceived the Oregon Territory and gave birth to the state of Oregon. With over 7000 Donation Land Claims in Oregon alone, it is important that regional surveyors understand their history and development. This is significant because Donation Land Claims, established over 150 years ago, continue to have an impact on surveying today. The goal of this paper is to provide an overview of Donation Land Claims and provide insight into methods and instruments used in their creation. Another important goal is to introduce some of the anomalies and characters associated with these historically significant surveys and the times during which they were conducted. It is through these irregularities and the lessons learned from them that the importance of following appropriate surveying practices is highlighted.
