- Title
Performative Masculinities: The Pachuco and the Luchador in the Songs of Maldita Vecindad and Café Tacuba.
- Authors
Solórzano-Thompson, Nohemy
- Abstract
The article focuses on the contemporary representations of the luchador and the pachuco, performative identities for lower class men, in the songs of Mexico City bands Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio and Café Tacuba. These bands use the figures of the pachuco and luchador to construct positive and epic portrayals of lower class men. In most songs of Maldita Vecindad y los Hijos del Quinto Patio, the vecindad, poorest area in the city, becomes the center of urban experiences and the site where identity and resistance are formed. Songs of Café Tacuba often situate in the centro histórico of the city to redefine this area.
