- Abstract
The technique of metal surface hardening via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) in thin films followed by fusion penetration of the metal surface by means of solar radiation is described. It has been established that SHS leads to the formation of the δ phase of an Al-Ni system in the three-layer film structure Ni-Al-Ni and that the SHS reaction in the film coating proceeds via four stages. It has been shown that, after fusion penetration, hardening products of SHS are concentrated in the surface layer at a depth of 1–2 μm and the microhardness of the as-treated stainless steel samples increases by a factor of 1.7.
