The article discusses legends about the mysterious friar-cum- Muslim, drawing upon the historical methods and the argument of historian John Tolan's "Saint Francis and the Sultan." Topics discussed include the crucial notion of lieux de mémoire, two friars who went among the Muslims and the realms of their memory, Francis of Assisi and Anselm Turmeda and development of the Turmeda legend.
