- Abstract
Soil and water parameters plays major role in freshwater fish farming and need to be considered for sustainable production. Evaluation of soil and water quality parameters of 28 operational freshwater fish farms of Raigad district were conducted as per the standard procedures of APHA, comprising of 12 freshwater fish farms from North Raigad region, 11 from Central Raigad region and 5 from South Raigad region. The range of soil parameters recorded were, pH 6.1 to 8 (7.02 ± 0.26), water holding capacity 50.53 to 72.03 % (61.86 ± 4.75), conductivity 1.25 to 3.55 dS/m (2.58 ± 1.14), moisture 9 to 16 % (12.14 ± 1.42), bulk density 1.2 to 1.29 g/cm3 (1.24 ± 0.01). Whereas, the range of water parameters namely salinity 3 to 6 PSU (4.5 ± 1.5), temperature 27 to 300C (28.35 ± 0.51), pH 7.4 to 8 (7.66 ± 0.11), dissolved oxygen 4 to 5.6 mg/l (4.62 ± 0.29), ammonia 0.02 mg/l (0.02 ± 0), total alkalinity 100 to 140 mg/l (120 ± 8.81), total hardness 70 to 140 mg/l (107.5 ± 14.09) and transparency were found between 30 to 45 cm (35.35 ± 3.45). Minor seepage rate of 2 to 7 cm/day was recorded in sampled freshwater fish farms. The observed values of soil and water parameters as well as the seepage rate of Raigad district are within the ideal recommended ranges; thus indicating a very great potential for sustainable development of freshwater fish farming in the Raigad district.
