- Abstract
The beach seine locally known as 'Rampan' is net operated by traditional fishers of Sindhudurg district. There were total 83 Rampan sangh in operational in district. This study comprehends socio-economical aspects and constraints of rampan operators. All respondents from three tehsils of Sindhudurg were selected and interviewed. The appropriate statistical analysis was performed to draw conclusions. The 55.43% of the rampan operators were in middle-old age group, 90.36% had family size of less than 5, 100% own their houses, 75.90% had completed middle school education. Average annual income of family was Rs.1,19,473.68, while the average income of member was Rs. 27,214.96. Maximum expenditure was on non-food (35%) followed by food items (30.42%) and saving up to 33.70% of their total earning. The uncontrolled purse-seine fishing and increased rate of mechanized fishing were the most prominent constraints. It can be concluded that socio-economic condition of rampan operators of Sindhudurg district is needed to be improved with Government policy support.
