- Abstract
The article presents a comparative sketch of the political history of Ethiopia and Congo which despite sharing similar political characteristics in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries had evolved in opposite directions by the late nineteenth century. This divergence lay in their unique positions in the oceanic slave trade with Congo fragmented by centuries of slavery while Ethiopia was relatively unscathed. Ethiopia by contrast was protected by its Christian subjects and used resources from the peripherals of the trade that bolstered centralization.
