- Abstract
The article focuses on the aging population in the American society. It reports that through most of the American history, there have had low proportion of older people in the population of the U.S. It discusses several processes of change including the demographic change, household and occupational work which have resulted in a large increase in the proportion of older people in the population. It states that the proportion of 65 plus population has risen from 4.1 in 1900 to 8.2 percent in 1950 and the trend is still upward. It also states that not only has the proportion of older people greatly increased but their average state of health has also improved. It highlights the growing trend of nuclear families in the nation.
