- Abstract
Giardia lamblia samples were taken from patients at Salah Al-Din General Hospital, Tikrit, suffering from Giardiasis from November 2018 until April 2019. Cysts of G. lamblia was isolated and infected in laboratory mices Balb/c and then therapeutic attempt was made with water extract of Peganum harmala in three different concentrations and some biochemical parameters have been studied through rate of changes in Cholesterol, Triglycerids, Total protein and some of liver enzymes (AST) Alanine transaminase, (ALT) Aspartate transaminase and response of infected mice for treatment with water extracts. A significant decrease was observed in concentration of lipids in general. The decrease was significant in concentration of Cholesterol and Triglycerides and total protein in laboratory mice. The lowest concentration was achieved when using extract with 0.5 ml, 120, 30 and 4.201 mg/dl, respectively, The highst concentration when using extract was with 2 ml, 181, 34, and 5.103 mg/dl, respectively compared to control group 182, 35 and 5.01 mg/dl, respectively. Significant changes were also observed. As for concentration of both AST/ ALT, the results showed significant changes in their concentration in infected mice. level of decrease was significant in their concentration. The lowest concentration of AST was at 0.5 mL, 17 IU/L and ALT 14 IU/ L at 0.5 mL of extract, The highest concentration of AST was at 2 mL, 31 IU/L, and ALT 28 IU/L at 2 mL of extract compared to control group of 27 IU/L. Significant changes were observed in concentration of AST and ALT after treatment with therapeutic extract Above. In conclusions, there was a difference in concentration of lipids and total proteins in laboratory mice with Giardiasis and treatment with different concentrations of plant extract of P. harmala by using three concentrations (0.5, 1, 2) ml. It was noted that cholesterol decreased when using extract with 0.5 ml concentration was 120 mg/dL, while its highest concentration was 2 ml at 181 mg/dL and triglycerides were affected by use a minimum concentration of water extract 30 mg/ dl at 0.5 mL concentration, while the highest concentration was 34 mg/dl at 2 ml of plant extract. Total protein was 5.103 mg / dl, when using 2 ml while the lowest rate was 4.201 mg/dl when the dose was 0.5 ml compared with control group of 5.01 mg/dl. And the lowest concentration of liver enzyme AST was at 0.5 ml, 17 IU/L, while highest concentration was at 2 ml reaching 31 IU/ L. Liver enzyme ALT was 14 IU/L at a dose of 0.5 ml, while highest concentration of it was at dose of 2 ml at 28 IU/L.
