- Abstract
The article examines casting lots and cannibal democracy in American maritime literature during the antebellum period. Topics include sailors' accounts of casting lots for life and death, the rules of cannibal lottery, and the characteristics of shipwreck narratives. Also discussed are several American maritime literature including "The Journal of the Shipwreck and Suffering of Daniel Foss" by Nathaniel Coverly and "Sign of the Cannibal" by Geoffrey Sanborn.
