A cross-sectional survey of 11,631 male and female high school students con- ducted in 1990 indicates that 8% had been in a fight in the preceding month. Twelve percent of all students surveyed had two or more sexual partners over the previous three months, compared with 29% of students who had been in one fight in the past month and 53% of those in two or more fights. Similarly, 29% of all high school students had not used a condom the last time they had sex, compared with 40% of those involved in one fight and 51% of those in two or more. Youths who had been in fights were also much more likely to have attempted suicide in the previous year, to have carried firearms, to have driven while drunk and to have used cocaine.
