- Abstract
This article presents an interview with John Devine, chief financial officer (CFO) of automobile company General Motors Corp. Devine talks about the strategy that he has implemented to improve GM's global market position. According to him, there are four primary roles that a CFO plays today: the foundation role, the operations role, the strategy role and the external role. The external role of the CFO is to interact within the industry, media and other interest groups. According to Devine, the job of a CFO is to drive the results of the company for which they get paid. The financial restructuring plan implemented by the company focuses on both revenue and cost.
