- Abstract
This article discusses the surgical simulation of laparoscopic low anterior resection (lap-LAR) for rectal cancer in a patient with situs inversus totalis (SIT), a condition where the organs are horizontally inverted. The authors used a video of laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (lap-RHC) in patients with normal anatomy as a simulation to understand the mirror-image anatomy and motion of laparoscopic instruments during lap-LAR. They found that the location and running direction of the main vessels in lap-RHC are similar to those in lap-LAR with SIT, and that lymph node dissection and vessel division can be performed as in lap-RHC. The authors conclude that this concept is helpful for surgeons in capturing both the mirror-image anatomy and motion of laparoscopic instruments in lap-LAR in patients with SIT.
