- Abstract
From cancer registration to cancer patientregistry in the South of the Netherlands, since 1955: the case of the Eindhoven Cancer Registry The Eindhoven Cancer Registry in the south of the Netherlands, held by the Comprehensive Cancer Center South (IKZ) since 1982 does not only have a long history, since 1955, having survived disruptive forces in 1974 and 1981. Since 1989 it is also part of the Netherlands Cancer Registry, still held by eight CCC's, likely two in the near future. As a result there is both uniformity and diversity in the Netherlands which pays off in output and commitment of stakeholders. The clinical orientation and potential for realizing commitment from a variety of academic groups, especially from the dept. of Public Health at Erasmus MC Rotterdam and the dept of Medical Psychology at the University of Tilburg has created much added value, also for these departments through quite a few of MSc and PhD-projects. The commitment of regional, national and international stakeholders in cancer surveillance has led to identification of four research domains within and around the cancer registry: public health and prevention including evaluation of mass screening, biomarkers and prognostics, quality of care of process and outcome, specified as quality of life in long term survivors. Thus, a diverse approach to mostly epidemiological studies was followed using the data optimally in presentations, PhD theses and peer-reviewed papers. Priority activities have developed through studies of the elderly with or without co-morbidity (as indicator of complexity), of concrete signs and symptoms and feelings translated into quality of life features, and studies of adherence to guidelines and effects of regionalization of surgery. The recently developed possibilities of pharmaco-epidemiological studies of utilization and side effects will allow a better discussion of the practice-based value of the various systemic treatments.
