- Abstract
Cited as a hero of the American War of Independence, J. P. G. Mühlenberg is a relevant case when it comes to addressing a transatlantic conception of political Enlightenment. Being raised in Pennsylvania in a family of German pastors, Mühlenberg was also the heir of a European tradition of religious reform and the bearer of American values leading to republican emancipation. He therefore stood for the trans-national dimension of the Enlightenment.
