History provides us with numerous examples where war has helped both sides in the conflict to build a particular national identity. The propaganda analysis of the Chechen-Russian conflict (1994-1996) gives us specific tools to determine the political use of violence in the imagination of nations. This paper presents an overview of some influential political-military and media strategies in Russian and Chechen nation-building during the First Chechen War.
