- Title
Sold Down Tobacco Road.
- Abstract
The article considers the move of different tobacco companies in the U.S. to target African American and GLBT communities. The evolution of marketing which focuses on African Americans reveals some vital parallels to the way in which Big Tobacco is targeting GLBT communities. Just as tobacco companies recruit openly gay employees and provide funds into GLBT organizations, both local and national, they filled the coffers of almost every influential African American organization. As a result, the 28 percent smoking rate among African Americans is higher than the national norm.
