- Title
Female Orphans in Africa Are No More Likely to Marry Early Than Nonorphans.
- Authors
London, S.
- Abstract
The author reports that female teenagers in Sub-Saharan Africa who have lost one or both parents are not more likely to marry before they turn 18 than non-orphaned teenagers. Results from a health survey did find, however, that female orphans have an increased chance of early sexual debut in four countries and an increased chance of early pregnancy in two countries. Risks linked to different kinds of orphanhood varied across countries. Researchers recommend further study to determine the reasons for differences by orphanhood type and country.
