- Title
Use of anti-inflammatory medication in healthy athletes – no pain, no gain?
- Authors
Mackey, A. L.
- Abstract
In this editorial the author examines research on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in athletes. NSAIDs are often used to prevent delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) but in studies has been shown to have no real effect in prevention. Further, evidence is suggesting that NSAIDs have an adverse effect on skeletal muscle metabolism and growth. The author says it is more beneficial to put up with some pain rather than risking skeletal growth.
