- Abstract
A biography of David Belasco, a theater producer and playwright, is presented. Belasco was born in San Francisco, California on July 25, 1853 to a family descended from Portuguese Jews. He developed his interest in theater and drama when he attended the Lincoln Grammar School as a student of Bernhard Marks. As a stage manager, Belasco was known for being inventive and incorporating realism into scenes. He is remembered for his production of "Madame Butterfly" in 1900, and "The Girl of the Golden West" in 1905. Belasco died at the age of 76.
