- Abstract
The article recalls the heroism of Lieutenant Alfred Sharff of Portland, Oregon as part of the celebration of the anniversary of World War II. His heroic act that resulted to his death on November 8, 1942, when U.S. Allied Forces began Operation Torch landings in French North Arica, earned him the posthumous award of the Distinguished Service Cross. The award is said to be the country's second highest award for valor, for extraordinary heroism in action against an armed enemy.
