- Authors
Meyers, Christopher C.
- Abstract
The article focuses on college football history in Georgia and the death of Richard Vonalbade Gammon, a quarterback on the University of Georgia's Bulldogs team. The events at the October 1897 game in Atlanta between the Bulldogs and the University of Virginia's Cavaliers team are mentioned. The rule changes in the early years of football that the increased violence and made it a more dangerous sport, the contributions of University of Georgia's professor Charles H. Herty to the intercollegiate athletic program, and the illegality of mass plays in football are discussed. Media coverage of Gammon's death, Southern evangelicals' and Methodist ministers' call for a ban on football, and anti-football legislation proposed in the Georgia General Assembly are noted.
