- Abstract
First, we establish proper indications for blood transfusion using non-inferiority trials, comparing transfusion and no or restrictive transfusion strategies in common belief indications. When we have gone through the steps of optimizing transfusion products, we may need to start over again, investigating transfusion indications. 1 The past decades, insight in transfusion-related morbidity and mortality next to awareness for donor burden has led to balance the perceived upside of allogeneic blood transfusion. 24117702 12 Sperry JL, Ochoa JB, Gunn SR, Alarcon LH, Minei JP, Cuschieri J. An FFP:PRBC transfusion ratio >/=1:1.5 is associated with a lower risk of mortality after massive transfusion.
