- Title
Waste not, Want not: Manuscript Fragments in the Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland.
- Authors
Barratt, Alexandra
- Abstract
Early binders often used medieval manuscript material as wrappers, pastedowns, quire-guards, and spine liners. A careful examination of early printed books in the Sir George Grey Special Collections, Auckland Libraries, unearthed a number of such fragments, while the availability of online Latin texts and of easy digital photography facilitated their identification, and that of previously known fragments. Notably, one substantial group proved to be from the earliest known medieval manuscript in the Southern Hemisphere: a Carolingian Bible. The Auckland fragments also generally confirm an international pattern: early binders preferred manuscripts that had become obsolete, particularly those of texts newly available in print.
