- Abstract
This article explores the life and work of Johann Andreas Herrlein, an 18th-century Baroque artist. Originally creating devotional paintings for the Frauenberg in Fulda, Germany, Herrlein's artwork was brought to the United States in 1875 when the friars emigrated. His style evolved over time, influenced by rococo and Enlightenment styles, and he eventually focused on landscape and genre paintings. Although Herrlein was forgotten in the 19th century, there has been a renewed interest in his work in the 20th century. Two of his paintings, depicting Saint Bonaventure and Saint Peter of Alcantara, are now held in New York and are seen as spiritually inspiring to viewers. The text emphasizes that these paintings are not exclusive to the Franciscan friars and can have a meaningful impact on anyone who engages with them.
