- Abstract
This article focuses on the separation and characterization of uremic metabolites in biologic fluids. The design of dialysis membranes and of the operational parameters of dialysis systems has been determined primarily along the lines of optimization of the mass transfer of the readily measured but not necessarily toxic low mol wt uremic solutes. The middle molecule hypothesis, however, now questions the validity of this empirical approach and suggests the primacy of the toxic potential of uremic metabolites of middle molecular configuration, a concept, which if proven to be valid, offers the opportunity of effecting dramatic changes in dialysis techniques.
