An essay is presented that discusses the role of the Sephardic Italian Jew Sabato Morais as the founding president of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), later known as the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTSA), and in relation to Conservative Judaism in the U.S. Topics include Morais's research on Jewish history in relation to the JTS curriculum; his promotion of values including duty, humility, and sacrifice at the seminary; and its relation to 19th century Jewish theologies.
