- Abstract
The purpose of this article is to historically examine why mathematics is taught in primary schools within the scope of general objectives of mathematics curriculum. The data set includes ten mathematics curricula that were implemented between 1926-2018. Continuities and discontinuities in the aims of each curriculum are analyzed through the historicizing methodology. Seven continuous cultural theses are diagnosed in the aims of mathematics courses that produce reasonable, informative, and productive citizens. These theses are using mathematics in daily life, perceiving the environment mathematically, communicating mathematically, developing mathematical habits of mind and aesthetic values, and maintaining economic efficiency and social order. As a result, it has been revealed what kind of humankind is anticipated through school mathematics and what kind of society is desired, while the eclectic existence of diverse interests is revealed in designing the aims of school mathematics. The historical analysis contributes to the field by making the social, economic, societal, and governmental aspects of the aims of school mathematics visible. Suggestions were made for curriculum developers and mathematics education researchers in line with the cultural theses that are absent and present in the general objectives of mathematics curricula.
