- Abstract
The article discusses the scope, purpose, and impact of the espionage activities conducted by tsarist Russia's intelligence services in Bulgaria from the beginning of the 20th century through the First World War. Documents have recently come to light from the Russian State Military-historical Archiva (RGVIA) and the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA) as well as from the Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior that provide fresh information on the efforts of the Russian General Staff, working largely through military attaches, to obtain information on Bulgaria's defense preparations. The aticle includes details of organizational changes in the structure of Russian military intelligenc eand also on Russia's expenditures for intelligence in Bulgaria and elsewhere in the Balkans.
