- Abstract
In order to know the preference and consumption offered as meal of different morphological parts of Ricinus communis L. [blade leaves (HRc), petiole (PRc), stems (TRc), blade leave + petiole (HPRc), complete plant (PCRc)] in Pelibuey sheep by cafeteria test in two periods, four sheep with a live weight of 26.4 ± 4.0 kg were used. They were healthy, wormed, and housed individually with a maintenance base diet with vitamins. The first period lasted 20 days in which the first days 40 g of each treatment were offered four hours each day with a daily increase of the quantity depending on the consuming dynamics, always estimating five percent rejection. The results of the first period showed a higher preference for blade leaves compared with the other treatments [HRc 72.9a, PRc 1.4b, TRc 0.8b, HPRc 6.9b and PCRc 5.4b (P <0.01)]. After this period, followed a second essay that lasted 12 days, where the meal of the leaves (HRc) was offered throughout 24 h. The average consumption in this period was 433 g DM/animal, without any signs of poisoning. Hence, the meal of R. communis blade leaves was the preferred part consumed by the ovine, which is a good feed alternative for ruminants.
