- Abstract
The article reports on a project being funded by oil company Shell in Hawaii to produce transport fuel from marine algae as part of its effort to use sustainable non-food raw materials as feedstocks in the production of biofuels. Shell has partnered with Hawaii-based HR Biopetroleum to build a pilot facility to grow algae from which it will extract vegetable oil that can be converted into biodiesel. The joint venture formed by the two companies is called Cellana. The research facility will grow only non-modified, marine microalgae species approved by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.
