- Title
Stefan Zweig's Judaism.
- Authors
Garrin, Stephen H.
- Abstract
The article explores the attitude of Austrian author Stefan Zweig toward Judaism. One of the major influences on Zweig's perception of Jews and the Jewish problem was his acquaintance with Theodor Herzl. When the National Socialist regime came to power in Austria, his books were burned because they were written by a Jew. When Zweig was sought to enlist in the Zionist movement, he declined. There are a few instances where Jewish motifs occur in his literary works. Among the narrative episodes where one finds Jewish themes are the short stories "Im Schnee," "Der begrabene Leuchter" and "Buchmendel."
