- Abstract
The article discusses the efforts of the Brazilian government to regulate the shantytowns surrounding Rio de Janeiro, Brazil before the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Topics discussed include the use of the word "pacification" to describe the regulation efforts, the use of Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora (UPP), or Pacifying Police Unit, to pacify the shantytowns, and tourism in the country.
