- Title
The Future of Sixteenth Century Studies: "Que sais-je?" Speculation on Historical Studies as Yet Unwritten.
- Authors
Mentzer, Raymond A.
- Abstract
This article presents discussion of the discipline and methodology of historical scholarship and research as of 2009 and reflects on possible changes which could occur within the field in the following 40 years. The historical philosophy of Michel de Montaigne is cited, noting that prediction of future trends is nearly impossible, and that historical knowledge is always rooted in a particular context. Developments in Reformation-era historical studies since 1969 are outlined, particularly the broader inclusion of multiple perspectives. Comments are then given suggesting that future developments are not predictable.
