- Title
Symposium: Real and Unreal in Psychiatry.
- Authors
Shorter, Edward
- Abstract
The author reflects on the issues regarding the truthfulness of mental illnesses in psychiatry and in other branches of medicine. He suggests that modest views are needed to identify the truthfulness of a disorder because different perceptions are given by medical anthropologists, psychiatrists, and clinical experts. He approves on the statement about manic-depressive illness (MDI) given by Emil Kraepelin, a German psychiatrist, saying that MDI is the combination of all mood depressions.
