- Authors
Baxter, James
- Abstract
The article argues in support of choosing monolingual English Learner's dictionaries while teaching ESOL. Monolingual dictionaries help students use conversational definition in speech and so they benefit from the full range of resources offered in spoken English. Both bilingual and monolingual dictionaries have influences over vocabulary behavior of students. Bilingual dictionary encourages students to employ single lexical item whereas monolingual dictionary helps students gain a fluency in the language being learned. The article examines the vocabulary behavior that reveals the relationship between dictionary use, classroom vocabulary behavior and the success of students in meeting their communicative needs. Data based on a questionnaire is presented that describes the dictionary habits and preferences of a population of Japanese university students learning English as a second language.
