- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the African American magazine the "Messenger," the book "When Washington Was in Vogue: A Love Story (A Lost Novel of the Harlem Renaissance)," by Edward Christopher Williams and the book "Passing," by Nella Larsen. Particular focus is given to the depiction of the African American middle class, or bourgeoisie, during the Harlem Renaissance within the aforementioned literature.
