World Bank Survey Missions and the Politics of Decolonization in British East Africa, 1957-1963.
- Authors
Roes, Aldwin
- Abstract
The article discusses the results of surveys that probed the economic development of the East African territories of Tanganyika, Uganda and Kenya after gaining their independence from Great Britain. The surveys were conducted by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) or World Bank. The surveys indicate that the economic problems encountered in Africa were likely the result of continued economic dependence on the British Empire that impeded their efforts to establish local economies. The article examines the decision making process that the IBRD used prior to conducting the surveys as well as the interactions between IBRD officials and British colonial administrators.
