- Abstract
We analyze the influence of saturation with hydrogen on the physicomechanical characteristics of oxidized and nitrided annular specimens cut out from the fuel tubes made of Zr–1% Nb alloy. It is shown that the hardened near-surface layer formed in controlled (oxygen- and nitrogen-containing) gas media affects their long-term strength in the course of holding in air for 100 h. The specimens preliminarily oxidized and nitrided and then saturated with hydrogen fail in the course of holding in air at room temperature under stresses of 490–510 MPa. This stress range is ten times narrower than for the nonhydrogenated annular specimens destroyed under stresses of 400–600 MPa. We study the character of their fracture for different modes of treatment.
