- Abstract
The article focuses on the history of prostitution and the red-light district in Amsterdam, Netherlands. One of Amsterdam's first by-laws in 1413 authorized the existence of brothels on the grounds of commerce, pragmatism, and the teachings of the church. Changes in laws regarding brothels and prostitution occurred as a result of the Reformation; the implementation of the Napoleonic Code in 1810; and social pressure brought about laws in 1911. The history of immigration into Amsterdam and its effect on the city's culture are discussed.
