The article analyzes the short stories "An Empty Home," by Xiu Bai, and "The Story of Hu Wenqing," by Wei Wei. The author discusses how the reader is challenged to ask what it is that is empty in the world and its cause in "An Empty Home," while the closing scene of "The Story of Hu Wenqing" asks the reader to question whether the Hu is not wrong, as it portrays a symbolic conflict between Buddhist enlightenment imagery and image of vanity.
