- Abstract
From the perspective of construction grammar and its critique (Bosque, 2021), this article considers the hypothesis that conditional sentences expressing ‘exception’, among other conjunctional phrases, which start with a menos que and its variant a no ser que are a constructional idiom. Construction, constructional idiom, and grammatical phraseme are defined. Afterwards, the formal and content properties of conditional sentences expressing ‘exception’ are described. The main problem was proving that the content of the construction was determined by its structure and not a menos que and a no ser que. In the discussion section, results lead to the position that the analysis of conditional constructions expressing ‘exception’ is not conclusive regarding the action of the structure upon the entire set. Taking everything into consideration, we insist on the theoretical significance of the problems examined in the article, especially the nature of constructional idioms and its relationship with grammatical constructions.
