- Abstract
The history of humans, their companion animals and the struggle to rid them of ectoparasites is a long one. Many agents and strategies have been employed, but it is only in relatively recent times that effective chemical agents for use in pets have been developed. We now have a great variety of effective, safe and easy to use products, yet ectoparasites continue to be a major cause of skin disease, and vectors of systemic diseases. This article follows the development of ectoparasiticides and examines the reasons for failure of control. The future of ectoparasite control is also discussed.
