- Abstract
The epileptic crisis occurs as a result of excessive synchronous neuronal activities in the brain, causing signs or sudden abnormal symptoms and brief alterations of consciousness, motor events, sensitive and sensory, autonomic or psychic involuntary. Such pathology is very common during childhood and, consequently, more serious, because it is involved in the child's growth and development process. The ketogenic diet is a non-pharmacological approach to refractory epilepsy, used when there is a lack of response to treatment with two or more antiepileptic drugs to control seizures. The present study aimed to efficacy of the ketogenic diet in the treatment of epilepsy in children through a literature review, in which scientific papers published in Portuguese and English were searched. After an evaluation of the studies, it was verified that ketogenic diet is an effective alternative treatment for epilepsy, since correctly followed, characterized by the high concentration of lipids and restriction of proteins and carbohydrates, which represents a great challenge to the nutritionist to adapt feeding according to the nutritional needs of each child and allowing greater cooperation and adherence to treatment by the patient and his / her relatives.
