- Abstract
Studies on the works of John Minsheu for the teaching of Spanish traditionally insisted on his status as an unscrupulous plagiarist. Although this accusation has been revised and nuanced, it is evident that the English author used texts from other authors without mentioning their origin. This is what happens in «The Proeme» of his Spanish Grammar (1599), in which he used the introduction of the Gramática de la lengua vulgar de España published in Louvain in 1559 as a source. Although Minsheu translated almost literally in his «Proemio» much of the introduction to this anonymous grammar, the contrastive study of both works shows that he did not carry out a literal and careless plagiarism. On the contrary, Minsheu systematically modified and eliminated certain aspects of the Leuven text, transforming its polemic intention and its argumentative structure around the linguistic plurality in Spain in the 16th century.
